Yahweh provokes David to Number Israel

David’s census is recorded twice. In 2 Samuel 24:1 the anger of the LORD is kindled, and Yahweh himself moves David to number Israel and Judah. Seventy thousand die in the plague that follows. In 1 Chronicles 21:1 the same act is attributed to Satan: “Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel.” Same command, same sin, same death. This is not a copyist error. Scripture itself equates the instigator. The Father tempts no one (James 1:13) and judges no one directly (John 5:22). The god who incites the census and sends the plague is the adversary, not the Father Jesus revealed.
